"I really enjoyed the music. She brought out the fun in everyone."
- Christine
I love playing in care homes and I'm very passionate about bringing an accessible, inclusive and enjoyable experience to everyone. With sessions tailored to the preferences and needs of the residents, I enjoy taking requests and perform a variety of music - with a particular focus on songs from their younger days which always go down well!
"Stella is wonderful and really enhances the music that she plays. She has a lovely personality and involves all the residents by kneeling in front of each person and singing and playing for them."
- Patricia
My performance includes a mixture of singing and playing violin to backing tracks through my amplifier, with some tunes upbeat and energetic, and some more comforting and calming, I use extra long leads that reach all around the room, allowing me to really connect with each person individually.* I am always conscious of personal space though and if anyone prefers me not to get too close, I never take offence (honest)!!
When I'm singing, I offer everyone a turn on the microphone - most residents love to have a go and really enjoy hearing themselves sing through the mic. Many have absolutely beautiful voices and whilst the sessions are uplifting, they can be very emotionally moving too and I'm always completely blown away by the power of music.
*I make sure all my equipment is secure, that no-one can trip over any leads and I am aware of safety at all times while I'm performing.
"She is really kind and so good at what she does." - Rene
I also bring a variety of percussion instruments with me and everyone is welcome to choose something to play if they'd like to join in! I try to encourage this as apart from being great fun, rhythmic exercises like drumming, clapping and playing a tambourine or shaker can help with cognitive and motor functions, reduce anxiety, and improve social interaction between residents. I'm not formally trained in music therapy, but I have lots of experience running sessions for adults and children with physical and/or learning disabilities at The Markfield Project in Tottenham, and for people with dementia in respite care and nursing homes in South East London and Surrey.
"Stella was lovely. She is a lovely person herself. She made the
day very beautiful." - Anthea
I get so much joy from playing in care homes. Music is truly amazing at connecting us all, no matter what age we are.
