"Stella's music is an extension of the beautiful person that she is. I've picked her out of huge ensembles subconsciously before now. I'll be listening to a song for the first time and find myself thinking about her and she's always in the credits.
elbow's sound has strings at it's heart and those strings have always been written with the songbird, gentle yet ferocious passion of Stella's playing in mind.
She is the violin I hear in my head.
She is the music in my heart."
- Guy Garvey
When I was six my teachers noticed that I wouldn't stop singing and making up songs. Fortunately for me this led to free violin lessons which I instantly loved - my family maybe not so much during those early practice sessions! Aged twelve I won a scholarship to Trinity College of Music where I also learned viola, piano, singing and composition, and discovered a passion for the cello, guitar and drums too. Performing Vaughan Williams' 'Suite for Viola and Orchestra' at St. John's Smith Square was a highlight of my time there, making me one of the youngest ever soloists to conquer the challenging Moto Perpetuo.
I adored classical music but was always drawn to pop and joined my first band when I was fourteen. Finding I could improvise in all sorts of styles, I soon became a session musician, playing with numerous groups and backing artists on tv shows like 'Top of the Pops' which was very exciting indeed!
My work brings me so many unforgettable experiences, and hanging out, jamming and recording with George Harrison round his house was most definitely one of those! He introduced me to his dear friend Ravi Shankar during this time, and I had the immense privilege of playing on Ravi's beautiful album 'Chants of India'. Sadly, George passed away not long after, and I was extremely honoured to be invited to perform with some total legends in the deeply moving, yet beautifully uplifting 'Concert for George' held at the Royal Albert Hall.
I'm so grateful to enjoy a wonderfully varied musical career and I look forward to sharing my music with you,
in whichever form that may take!
I love playing at proposals, weddings and civil ceremonies. As the resident violinist at the stunning Fitzrovia Chapel in London, (run by an equally stunning team!) I play every month at their wedding open house, and I frequently serenade happy couples for the sensational proposal planners 'The One Romance' at breathtaking venues all across the country.
I also perform background music for a range of occasions on Thames Limo luxury river cruises, and I'm available for private parties, DJ gigs and corporate events on both acoustic and electric violin.
As a session musician, I write string arrangements, play various instruments and provide vocals for live gigs, recordings and tv/radio performances with both pop and classical superstars (please see 'artists I've played with') and I've been lucky enough to tour the UK, Europe and all over the world with some awesome people including elbow, Damon Albarn, Gorillaz, Il Divo, Mark Ronson, Roots Manuva, Sia, Simply Red, Snow Patrol, The Good, the Bad & the Queen and Will Young.
Two of my proudest achievements are composing and recording the strings on 'To Build A Home' with The Cinematic Orchestra, and playing on 'One Day Like This' by elbow. Such a great song to play with it's absolutely gorgeous melody!
I'm also experienced in Logic Pro and can offer remote recording services of BVs/all strings (violin, viola, cello) for your song, soundtrack, or other composition.
One of my favourite things about music is the way it helps us to communicate. Joining care home residents for a good sing along is something that I value enormously and hearing people recall the lyrics from the old time songs is totally amazing. I really do appreciate sharing this profound experience with them and the wonderful care home staff. And we all love a bit of a dance too!
In addition to the above, I enjoy busking on the London Underground and performing at festivals, kids holiday fun days, street fairs, farmers markets, exhibitions, charity events, and all sorts of other social functions.
I also love animals, emmerdale, marzipan, dancing, cribbage, table tennis, anything leopard print and exclamation marks...
which I have done my very best to minimise on here!!!
